How important is the quality of the air you breathe?

Most of us are aware we live in built-up areas and our air quality is not the best. But do we fully understand just how important our air quality is to our health? Probably not. But in 2018, the World Health Organisation (WHO) named air pollution as one of the biggest health threats we face today.

The 2018 Report showed:
• 91% of the world’s population live in places where air quality exceeds WHO guideline limits
• There are 4.2 million deaths every year as a result of exposure to outdoor air pollution
• 3.8 million deaths occur every year as a result of exposure to smoke from stoves, fuels and other pollutants in homes.

In the UK, Radic8 won 2nd place in Smogathon 2017 – a global competition for clean air technologies. Many indoor air purifiers entered, but the only technology to get through to the final was the type used in the Hextio, proving its effectiveness for reducing pollutants in indoor air.

Why is the Radic8 technology so different?

The Hextio is different from other air purifiers on the market because of the technology it uses. Most air purifiers use a particle filter to remove particles from the air and a carbon filter to remove other chemicals etc. The Hextio has a Photo-Catalytic reactor chamber instead. This chamber contains UV light and titanium dioxide tubes. The UV light activates the titanium dioxide which produces hydroxyl radicals. These react with airborne pathogens as they pass through the chamber and destroy them.

The reactor cells kill 99.9% of viruses in the air
The pollutants which are destroyed in the chamber include viruses, bacteria, odours, mould spores, fungi and toxic gases like formaldehyde, ammonia gas and toluene as well as house dust mites, pollen and pet dander. The reactor also neutralises nitrogen dioxide from diesel exhaust fumes. Once the air goes through the Photo-Catalytic reactor chamber, it then passes through a carbon filter which removes any remaining odours or particles from the air.

Small and automatic – the Hextio
The great thing about the Hextio is small and can be wall mounted, so it’s not going to take up too much space in your room. As well, it’s fully automatic. When you switch it on, the blue LED light comes on and the machine runs on ‘normal’, which is at 20% fan speed. If dust, germs or VOCs are detected by the sensor, the fan automatically switches to full power and the red LED lights are displayed. When the levels return to normal the Hextio returns to the 20% level until it detects another pollutant. This means the Hextio is constantly dealing with allergens, pollutants and bacteria – thus reducing any negative reactions you could have to these.

Sweet dreams are made of this
Another nice feature is the Hextio’s Sleep Mode. If set to this mode, the LED lights switch off and the machine runs on 10% of its power very quietly in the background.
If you ever need to change settings, you can use the remote control to set it to whatever mode you need. The Hextio is a small unit with the capacity to clean the air in a room up to 20 square metres. Although suitable for any room in the house, we recommend turning it off while cooking if it’s near the kitchen as the oils created can damage to the reactor cell. It’s fine to turn it back on, 10 minutes after cooking.

The Viruskiller VK Blue
Radic8 also offers the Viruskiller VK Blue whichhas a much larger capacity, cleaning up to 66 square metres at two air changes per hour and 44 square metres at three air changes per hour. This unit has a pre filter, an activated carbon filter, a true HEPA filter and a larger reactor cell. The Viruskiller is suitable for larger open plan living areas or for commercial premises.
